Alcohol-free special beers
The popularity of special beers has grown rapidly since the 1980s. But special beer without alcohol is still relatively new. In 2018, De Halve Maan was the first Belgian beer brand to launch an alcohol-free special beer: SportZot. The Bruges-based brewery had taken two years to produce a special beer without alcohol that was just as tasty as the alcoholic variants. Since then, the offer has grown considerably; you now have a choice if you fancy a specialty beer without alcohol!
How is alcohol-free special beer made?
There are many differences in the production methods used to brew alcohol-free special beers. Some brewers take one of their popular speciality beers and extract the alcohol from it after the brewing process. However, more and more breweries are using specially selected yeasts, which ensure that as few sugars as possible are converted into alcohol during the brewing process. As long as the alcohol percentage remains below 0.5%, the end product may be sold as an alcohol-free specialty beer.
