On Valentine's Day, lovers give each other extra attention through gifts, cards and/or a lovely romantic dinner.
But where does the phenomenon of 'Valentine's Day' come from?
On February 14, 469, Pope Gelasius proclaimed this day as Saint Valentine's Day. The reason was that priest Valentinus felt that love was much more important than waging war. He therefore secretly married many couples. However, this cost him dearly. When the Roman emperor found out, Valentinus was imprisoned, then tortured and executed. Shortly before his execution, he allegedly healed the jailer's blind daughter. Because of this miracle, he was canonised and this led to the day of Saint Valentine.
Nowadays, Valentine's Day is celebrated to put the spotlight on your loved one and it is also an opportunity to reveal your hidden crush. As many people find it exciting to confess this crush, a card, bunch of flowers or gift is also often sent anonymously. In addition, many relationships begin on this day, because lovers express their love to each other. A date to remember!
